The National Model for School Counseling Programs (American School Counselor Association) guides the school counseling program at South Rowan High School. Academic, Career, and Personal/social development are the strands in the national model. South Rowan High School counselors believe that optimal development within these strands is best accomplished through team effort with students, their family or supporters, and the community.
ACADEMIC RIGOR, ACHIEVEMENT, AND ENRICHMENT MATTERS: high achievement in rigorous high school courses is the best predictor of college success, and because of this South Rowan High School students are encouraged to take the most challenging courses for their ability levels. Taking difficult courses is important, but it is not effective in promoting student growth if students do not do well enough to benefit from the more challenging course content. Students need to take advantage of opportunities to expand learning experiences and enhance their academic passions beyond the walls of the traditional classroom. Students are encouraged to explore opportunities or create their own through research, volunteer opportunities, or independent study.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT: occurs across our lifespan. During high school, we teach and encourage soft skills, expanding self awareness, and career awareness. Career development is a collaborative, ongoing process that is best executed via collaboration between the student and their families and supporters, and other experts like our Career Development Coordinator. See your school counselor or Career Development Coordinator if you have questions, concerns or would like to have more individualized assistance with exploring career-related information.
SOFT SKILLS MATTER: knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to productive work in any setting is vital to current and future success. Attendance, attitude, social skills, self discipline, whether working at home, school or in the community, successful workers possess and demonstrate core skills that contribute to their development and that of the group, company or organization they are with.
SELF-AWARENESS MATTERS: a healthy and productive professional life is best achieved when one is employed in a field that matches an individual's values, goals, interests and abilities. Understanding yourself in the context of the world of work is a vital piece of the career development process.
CAREER AWARENESS MATTERS: rapid changes in the workforce parallel innovations and enhancements with technology. Students need to be aware of careers that align with their world view, and that they will need to continue learning across their lifespan to grow with future career opportunities.
PERSONAL/SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT: optimal personal/social development is rooted in healthy relationships, both with the self and others. By the time students enter high school, a lot of their foundational personal and social development is behind them, yet high school continues to provide rich opportunities for testing and continuing to define oneself. The school counseling program is designed to support students in the process of strengthening a healthy sense of self, practicing good interpersonal skills, and safely exploring and/or resolving issues that impact identity and well-being.
YOU MATTER: knowing who you are and where you fit in the world is an essential part of feeling whole and healthy. Personal safety is of paramount importance to all of us; please be sure to involve a school counselor if you may be in danger.
OTHERS MATTER: relationships give us strength, but they can also test us. Learning to develop and maintain healthy relationships with our friends, family and romantic partners can be challenging. Personal safety is of paramount importance to all of us; please be sure to involve a school counselor if someone you know may be in danger.
The Guidance Office is a safe space for all students and staff. It is a place where any student can come to get information or support. If a staff member you are seeking is not available when you need them and it is an emergency, please be sure to notify anyone in the Guidance Office so that person or an appropriate substitute can be immediately located for you.
